Checking In With Grace: To Cleanse Or Not To Cleanse?

“Losing weight is a marathon, not a sprint. I have to remind myself of this every time I do my weigh-ins and measurements. Two years ago, I was introduced to this magical weight loss tool: the juice cleanse. My office is filled with women and there isn’t a week that goes by where someone in my office isn’t on a juice cleanse/master cleanse/weight loss program. When I first started working here two years ago, my habits were pretty clean; healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner, running every morning, strength training, and sleeping well. Then I started going on my Michelin star adventure (going to every Michelin-starred restaurant in New York), sleeping in later, and changing my workout and eating habits dramatically. Our office is also filled with sugary cereals, unhealthy trail mixes, and cupcake deliveries practically every week! Sounds like a fun environment, but really, sometimes I feel like all I do is eat unhealthy food while I’m at work and I detox when I go home!

I did my first juice cleanse right before a wedding Ken (my fiance) took me to in the Midwest. I wanted to shed some weight but didn’t have the time to workout, so I bought a three-day cleanse and shed 12 pounds in three days. Sounds unhealthy, doesn’t it? I ended up gaining the weight right after the wedding (but the photos of me at that wedding are the thinnest I’ve been – ever!) I did a lot of juice cleanses– and have done practically every single one in New York — after the fifth one I completed, I realized that they didn’t work on my body any more and trying to lose weight in the future was getting more and more difficult.

Now that I’m eating healthily and working out, I still find it difficult to lose weight – possibly an aftershock of the juice cleanses. I realized that it’s so much better to do it the right way – slowly changing my eating habits, working out, getting on a schedule that I can stick to – is a much more meaningful process. Even though my weight loss is an uphill struggle, I know that if I stick to my current habits and push myself, I’ll be at the weight I’m comfortable with and look healthy by my July wedding.”  by Grace 1/22/13

  1. What three day juice cleanse did you do? I’m a healthy eater and exerciser but am going to Mexico in 8 days with mu husband and his company (just found out a week ago,) so…I’d love to do a cleanse. I only have about 10-15 lbs to lose but feel this cleanse would be a good way to feel confident in a swimsuit! Please oh please tell me the cleanse you went on for that Midwest wedding! Thx! Xo

      I did the Excavation cleanse by BPC (blueprintcleanse). It’s four green juices + spicy lemonade + cashew milk for three days straight. If it’s your first time cleansing, you might have some luck with weight loss, but it’s definitely not something I’d recommend for long term weight loss! As soon as you start eating normal foods again, you’ll see yourself gain all of the weight back. However, if you need something for a quick fix, this will do it.
